The Villa had some of the finest statuary of the time, influenced by the best he had seen during his travels. Born in the year 76, Hadrian ruled Rome from 117 until 138, when he died. He brought to an end the imperialist expansionism of the Roman Empire. He was a patron of the arts as well as a distinguished military leader.
